The Life & Whimsies of Knitty Lou

Spring cleaning is in high gear with my reading as well as knitting lately. At one time, I had nine books in progress, and at the moment I have ten knitting projects going. It’s all a bit overwhelming and I am determined to get through them before starting a bunch more.

So this weekend I went into my unfinished project basket and pulled out a beautiful lace scarf I started last summer and I am almost done with that, and then it’s back to my Market Cardi in order to finish it by the Estes Park Wool Market in a few weeks.

I have been knocking out books like crazy as well. I finished a few two weeks ago but I finished four just last week. They included

I have become completely addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series in the last few months. This installment was just as eventful, hilarious, and overwhelmingly frightening as the others. I have decided to take a break from this series for a while so that I can read a few others but I’m definitely planning on picking it up again very soon.

This was a sweet, light-hearted novel. It was a bit too sweet for my taste with no word of blood, murder, or creatures of the night, but it did entail plenty of magic and pretty descriptions. My firend, Kathy, recommended it to me and while I enjoyed it for the most part, I am not sure if I am going to pick up another title by this author.

While I loved the first title in this series, I was disappointed with this second one. The story progressed very slowly and I didn’t feel like the characters developed much since the first book. The story took place in the world of Inkheart rather than the “normal” world, but I felt like the characters from our world blended into the Inkheart world too much and it tended to be a very flat story. I do plan on reading the final installment, Inkdeath, but more for the finality of finishing the series than a passion for the story.

Laura gave me this series of five books because it fits the genre I typically really enjoy, paranormal horror. I have only finished the first book (there are two in each of the first two hardbacks) but definitely plan on picking it back up later. The story began with a bang but the intensity dwindled quickly. It picked back up about 2/3 of the way through it. It ended on a very suspenseful note and I imagine that now that the history has been laid out, the story will intensify and develop more thoroughly.

And I also got through another Papillon manga volume. (Which all in all shouldn’t count as reading)

I have started two new stories and plan on getting through at least one of them before starting anything else.

This book has been translated from Swedish and once I got past the dollars/kronos exchange, the places and localities, and the names I really have begun to enjoy the story. I am entranced by three of the main characters and each are mysterious and intriging in their own way. Steig Larsson has an amazing way of giving the reader just enough to keep them coming back for more without giving away too much, thus keeping us on the ends of our chairs. (Does that even apply to reading?)

I know I’ve mentioned this book before, but I officially started it late Saturday night. Laura and I have asked our entire knitting group to join in and the response was very successful. We have a scheduled discussion group within our knitting night on June 25th. A month is a very long time, but we have people out of town, so we wanted to make it accessible for everyone.
